Zinsser’s book about clutter was an enlightening look at how much fluff we fill our speeches with. Nothing is ever straight forward anymore, it’s all beating around the bush. From a societal standpoint we’ve been convinced that the bigger the words, the smarter the person speaking is. Two people can say the something two different ways and the one who uses the most will be considered the smarter one the person who used less words would be considered a simpleton. Simple words like “to” or “that” are clutter, but are the basis of most speeches. My personal writing style is very theatric and I often use larger words to exaggerate my point, but after learning about clutter, I see there are far better and easier ways to do things.
